California College Registry

Overview

The California Community College system is a vast network of institutions dedicated to providing accessible, affordable, and quality education. To better align with the system's mission and serve its diverse student body, a comprehensive redesign of the registry, job fair websites, and job application platforms was undertaken. The primary goal was to create a more visually appealing, user-friendly, and inclusive online experience that reflects the dynamic nature of the community college initiative.

My Role

Customer Insights & Ideation

I partnered with three project managers and one other lead designer to uncover insights and translate concepts into features that address customer behaviors and motivations.

Experience Strategy & Vision

I created frameworks and prototypes to share the vision, design principles, and content strategy. This helped to evangelize ideas, gain alignment, and drive decision-making.

Planning & Scope Definition

I defined the product with my project manager partners. I evangelized customer goals and balanced business goals. I prioritized and negotiated features for launch and beyond.

Oversight & Coordination

I designed across and collaborated with seven platform designers and their PM partners to translate product features for each platform context.

Design Execution & Validation

I designed down on web, Android, iOS, and web-app mobile. I executed journeys, wireframes, prototypes and design specs.

Design Leadership

I designed up and presented works to gain buy‐in from executives, senior stakeholders, and many other teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Process

Needs Assessment and Research

  • User Research: In-depth interviews and surveys were conducted with students, faculty, staff, and employers to understand their needs, pain points, and expectations.
  • Competitive Analysis: Existing community college and job-seeking platforms were analyzed to identify best practices and potential improvements.
  • Accessibility Audit: A thorough review was conducted to ensure compliance with accessibility standards and to make the platforms accessible to users with disabilities.

Design and Development

  • Visual Identity: A new visual identity was developed to align with the California Community College's branding and to reflect the diversity and inclusivity of the system.
  • User Interface (UI) Design: A clean, intuitive, and responsive UI was created to enhance user experience across different devices.
  • Information Architecture: The information architecture was reorganized to improve navigation and make it easier for users to find what they need.
  • Accessibility Features: Built-in accessibility features, such as screen reader compatibility and keyboard navigation, were implemented to ensure inclusivity.

Testing and Iteration

  • Usability Testing: The redesigned platforms were tested with a diverse group of users to identify any issues and gather feedback.
  • Iterative Design: Based on the testing results, the design was refined and improved to address any usability concerns.

Outcome

The redesign of the California Community College registry, job fair websites, and job application platforms has been a success in achieving its goals of creating a more visually appealing, user-friendly, and inclusive online experience. By focusing on user needs, accessibility, and a strong visual identity, the project has helped to position the California Community College system as a leader in providing accessible and equitable education and career opportunities.
